Planting Peace of Mind at the Marikina Watershed
Uplifting the lives of every Filipino, that was the M.O. last August 29, 2011 as the Boardwalk Charity Foundation, the charitable arm of Boardwalk, did its part in the reforestation of the Marikina watershed. The tree-planting activity was held during the celebration of National Heroes Day, turning the event's volunteers into eco-warriors for the benefit of the environment.
Dubbed as the Marikina Watershed Project, delegates from Boardwalk braved torrential rains and knee-deep rivers to reach the planting site and help alleviate the flooding in the area. Together with FPE3, a non profit organization created by the Foundation for the Philippine Environment, and YES Program officers, boardwalk was able to cover two hectares of upland area for the tree planting activities.
The goal of the Marikina Watershed Initiative is to resuscitate 9,500 hectares of land and pursue the development of sustainable agro-forestry livelihoods for communities within the area. Said watershed was the source of most flood waters that submerged Metro Manila during tropical storm Ondoy. The project hopes to avoid another disaster and ensure the safety of low-lying areas, specifically, Metro Mania.
Indeed, what the project has planted are trees that can give us peace of mind, something that we can leave as a legacy for the future generation. We may not enjoy it in this lifetime, but our children and our children’s children will have something great to remember us by.
Boardwalk Charity Foundation aims to sustain its environmental cause. We have learned a valuable lesson in such an experience, that if we work together, a lot of great things can be accomplished in support of the environment.
Living its mission, Boardwalk Business Ventures has the best interest of the Filipino people in mind.
