Boardwalk is one with White Cane 2011 in Finding The Right Way
Boardwalk, as a testament to its efforts to help every Filipino in becoming the best that they can be, has joined the Department of Education (DepEd) in celebrating the 22nd White Cane Celebration Day last August 6 at SM Fairview.
With Boardwalk's charitable arm, the Boardwalk Charity Foundation Inc. (BCFI) doing its part as one of the event's more notable sponsors to make the affair a success, White Cane 2011 became a celebration of how it's everybody's right to find the right path, and disabilities shouldn't stop you from doing so.
With the theme, ''Bastong Puti, Gabay Sa Tuwid Na Daan,'' White Cane 2011 is the 22nd commemoration of White Cane Safety Day as it promotes public awareness on the rights and welfare of blind persons, pursuant to Republic Act 6759, otherwise known as the ''White Cane Act.'' The event aims to recognize the white cane as a symbol of mobility for blind people; the protection of their physical, moral, and social well-being; it was also a vehicle to promote the welfare and social security of visually impaired people.
The use of the white cane came to prominence when Bristol photographer James Biggs used one back in 1921 to help him move around after he lost his vision in an accident. He chose a white cane so that he would be visible to pedestrians and motorists, even at night.
The symbolism of the white cane coincides with the mission of Boardwalk Charity Foundation of giving the less fortunate a shining beacon of hope they can depend on. Like the white cane, BCFI helps people in times of need, even during darker days by providing resources to children who are neglected, abandoned, abused, and settled in orphanages and rehabilitation centers.
BCFI is a family charity foundation that provides comprehensive programs and support services to disadvantaged children with Resources for the Blind as one of it's beneficiaries, as well as to destitute individuals and families affected by disasters.
BCFI is also affiliated with; Gawad Kalinga in building communities to end poverty, ANCOP in answering the cry of the poor, Boys Town in giving children a fresh start, and the Marikina Watershed in providing a haven for people afflicted with calamities.
Boardwalk formed the BCFI to be the ''white cane'' for people in need, alleviating human suffering and eradicating poverty among Filipinos.
